Doberman Pinschers and Rottweilers are two of the most impressive working dogs in the world. Both breeds have a long and fascinating history, with their stories intertwined in many ways. While the Doberman Pinscher wouldn't enter a show ring until 1897, more than three decades earlier, the fledgling breed was showcased at the inaugural Apolda dog market in 1863.The German Pinscher, Manchester Terrier, Rottweiler and Beauceron all look very similar in appearance, and these crosses did not change the appearance of the Doberman of the turn of the century, but rather improved it. Many of the other breeds that created Dobermans, such as Manchester Terriers, also show this distinctive black and tan coloration.
It is said that in the early 1870s, Herr Dobermann crossed the progeny of a blue-gray Pinscher dog and a black and tan butcher dog with a German Pinscher. When inspecting the dogs in his kennel, Dobermann selected the strongest, steelest and most intelligent dogs to help him collect taxes. After Dobermann died, attention began to be paid to the appearance of the breed as much as to its working capacity. Five years after Dobermann died in 1894, Göller, also a resident of Apolda, founded the first Doberman Pinscher club (in a bar during the same annual dog market) and helped write the first standard.
Rottweilers and Dobermans have the same ancestors and have done many of the same jobs throughout history, so it shouldn't be surprising that they have a lot in common besides their appearance. Both breeds were expected to fiercely defend their families and properties, even in situations that could cause them significant harm. So, while both dogs can grow to be quite tall, the Rottweiler is considered a large or giant dog, while the Doberman is a medium dog.If you like the look of Rottweilers and Dobermans and you're wondering why they look alike and which one you should choose, you'll probably find that the breed you choose is largely a matter of personal preference. Don't confuse your Doberman or Rottweiler going against your rules and limits with stupidity or an inability to learn.
